Cuba's Treasure - The Havanese Breed

The Havenese originated in Cuba during the 19th century. This dog was a pet in many homes across the country. When the Cuban revolution happened many Cubans moved to the United States, some of these new arrivals bringing these dogs along with them.

A breeder in the United States managed to come up with 11 Havanese to work with. She literally saved this breed from dwindling down to extinction. This breed was then registered by the AKC in 1996 in the Toy Group. They are still a very rare breed but popular to own.

The Havenese belongs to the Bichon family of dogs. This means there is no shedding to worry about with these dogs. These are sturdily-built small dogs with coats that are silky in texture. The coats come in many colors. As small as these dogs are, they do not given an impression of being fragile.  They are friendly by nature.

The Havanese has a great playful spirit and is a wonderful addition to any family. Their high energy often causes them to run throughout the home if they do not have a wide open space to roam. Owners are encouraged to provide a large enclosed area to promote this burst of energy. Their natural social skills make them great with children and strangers as well. The unpredictable behavior of children often causes many breeds to react with a level of defense, not this breed. The Havanese loves the attention of children and strangers yet will make it known if they sense danger. Their protective nature makes them a great pet for children.

This highly intelligent breed makes a great pet to attend social groups. It is simple to train this breed, yet owners are always encouraged to use positive reinforcement instead of negative discipline. They get along with other dogs well and do not need social skills training when it comes to social interactions. Owners are also encouraged to introduce other family pets at a slow pace. This breed although affectionate and socially adaptable may have a feeling of protection when interacting with other animals. .

This breed is rare for its health concerns because this breed remains healthy if cared for properly. Many mixed breeds or mixed breed dogs can develop cataracts or other health issues associated with old age. The grooming for this animal includes brushing two times a week and ensuring the teeth are brushed weekly.

The Havanese breed is a wonderful pet for families and children alike. The high energy, intelligent, loyal breed offers something for everyone. This breed requires the love and attention of a pet owner able to provide a stable home. Pet owners are often encouraged to seek additional demands or needs of this breed through other resources.
