Pug Health Problems

Pugs are prone to certain health problems and so you should understand them before you decide on getting this dog breed for your home and family.

Before purchasing a Pug, the entire family should familiarize itself with the type of special Pug dog health that the breed requires. This breed has long been recognized as an official breed, and became a member of the AKC Toy group in 1885. This breed is one of the most easily recognized with its flat wrinkly face, thickset body, and curly tail. Twenty to thirty pounds, and ten to fourteen inches tall is the standard for the Pug breed. There is no denying the adorable nature of these small dogs, but their size and skin often lead to very unique health concerns that an owner has to be aware of.

Inspect the dog's folds carefully for any sign of infection between them, as this is a common problem for Pugs and one that must be fixed by a vet. In order to prevent this infection, the Pug should be washed regularly to remove any dirt or other debris that could cause bacterial build up.

Another factor which could cause pug dog health problems is its eyes. Eye injury is caused due to the shape of the face, which prevents the eyes from being protected properly. Any infection should immediately be detected through regular eye exams, and any inflammation is a reason to take your dog to the vet immediately.

A common ailment among many of the Pug breed is eating more food than they need. Watching your Pug's food intake is a good idea, because keeping them at a healthy weight is as important as keeping a humans health regulated. The tiny dog breed is very sensitive to heat and humidity, and should never be left outside without shade or locked in a car during summer. Because of their facial structure, an overheated Pug can have a particularly hard time breathing, so the breed shouldn't be subjected to any high degree of heat for a prolonged time.

Providing good pug dog health isn't difficult, as all is that is needed is taking proper care of your pet and taking him to the vet when he needs it. If you take steps to insure proper health care, your pet will provide you happiness for many years.
