All Dog Breeds: R.I.P. "Ugga" R.I.P. "Ugga" ================================================================================ Sara Kester on 24 March, 2010 04:00:00 Uga VII passed away in November 2009 at only four years of age and during only his second football season with the University of Georgia. The passing of this pup was unexpected as he had received a clean bill of health only a week earlier from his veterinarian. The departed mascots are interred in a mausoleum within the confines of the University of Georgia stadium. Uga VII was the latest of mascots in the team’s 54 year history. He was the largest of the previous mascots, weighing 56 ½ pounds. His official name is UGA VII Loran’s Best and was named after long-time Georgia Athletic Association personality Loran Smith. Uga VII's Record Year: 2009 2008 Wins: 6 10 Losses: 4 3 The UGA mascot is always provided by the Seiler family of Georgia, who raises English Bulldogs as family pets. Although one of the Seilers’ other dogs is filling in as the interim mascot for the University of Georgia football team, it’s not clear whether it will be named as successor and become Uga VIII. A search is still underway of Uga VII’s brood of heirs. The seventh in the Uga line of Georgia mascots was introduced to the Georgia people on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, during pre-game ceremonies of the Bulldogs’ season opener against Georgia Southern. “Loran’s Best” officially became “Uga VII” as he was escorted onto the field by members of the Seiler family. The Georgia Bulldog mascot is the nation's most well-known mascot in over 100 years of collegiate history. The line of pure white English has been owned by the Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler family of Savannah, Ga., since Uga I first graced the campus in 1956. Although the University of Georgia is now known as the home of Uga, the pure white English bulldog, several mascots led the Red and Black before Frank W. Seiler provided the current lineage.
