Keeping Fleas Outside

By: Hank Robertson

Fleas are one of the worst issues your pet can bring into the home. You should also know that fleas are attracted to dirt and water. If you do not keep, a clean house chances are it is easy to have fleas, but if you do have a clean house and a pet, you can also have fleas. There are several things you can do to keep fleas from entering your home. If a flea has already entered your home there are a few choices you will have for getting rid of them. The key is to realize first what causes the fleas and then seek the proper treatment.

Your dog is a carry for insects. One way to make sure you do not get the fleas inside is by protecting your dog from the fleas. There are flea medications you can give your dog to prevent fleas from landing. You can also check your dog before allowing him in the house. Brush him outside, check for insects like ticks and other larger species, and during the process, you will find out if there are fleas. Fleas tend to bite human skin just as much, and they tend to be small enough that we cannot see them with the naked eye.

If You Already Have Fleas

If the fleas have already infiltrated your home, there are a few things you can do. First, you will need to bath your animals, and apply the flea medication. Make sure you do this outside or that you quickly get them out of the house before new fleas can land. Then you will need to have the children and pets gone for at least two to four hours depending on the type of flea insecticide you use. Most effective is usually the bug bomb. You simply set off a can in each room, including the garage. Then leave the house. These bug bombs will continue to flow for about ten minutes or less. Once they have stopped flowing, you can go in and open a few windows to clear the air. The extreme fog from the bomb will be enough to kill the fleas.

Once the house has been aired out and it is safe for you to enter, you will need to wash everything that you can. The blankets on the dogs bed, your bed, towels and other linens. You will also need to make sure that the surfaces have been wiped down. The fleas will already be dead so you are just protecting your family and dog from inhaling the insecticide. Your dog and family are extremely important to you, which mean you want to get rid of the fleas as soon as you notice them so that more do not have a chance to hatch. You also want to make sure the house is safe for them to return too.
